Ride Your Horse! Biographies

Darlene Harman, Ride Your Horse! Founder

Darlene Harman is the founder of Ride Your Horse! Therapeutic Riding Program. She has 20 years of horsemanship experience, 10 years of disabilities studies and has been NARHA certified since 2001.

Darlene grew up around horses in central California where she developed strong horsemanship skills and a love for the gentle steeds.

In 1994 while attending Saddleback College, Darlene was employed as a nanny for a child with special needs. She took the child who was visually impaired with multiple disabilities on field trips to a nearby equestrian center. Within a month of interacting with the horses, Darlene noticed child's physical and verbal skills improved dramatically. As she assisted with the child's multiple therapy sessions, Darlene began to research the effects of equines on children with special needs. She discovered the profound history of therapeutic riding, the impact it has on the lives of people with disabilities and NARHA.

Darlene was so inspired by the benefits she witnessed that she sought out a local program to participate in. Beginning as a volunteer, she quickly moved up to volunteer coordinator and assistant instructor positions. In 2001 she received NARHA certification, became the head instructor and the program director. Darlene served as the program director for three years before her passion for working with riders with disabilities drove her to open Ride Your Horse!.

Darlene's commitment to improving the lives of riders with disabilities is unyielding as is her gratitude for the help Ride Your Horse! receives. There is not a night that I don't close my eyes and know that with the help of our horses and volunteers, we are truly enriching the lives of children and adults with disabilities.
